The reason is that when the catabolic hormone cortisol attaches to its receptor it stimulates an enzyme called glutamine synthetase to break down muscle tissue which in turn releases glutamine. The end result is a reduction in muscle mass. Maintaining high blood levels of glutamine inactivates glutamine synthetase so your body does not tear down muscle tissue. Glutamine is also known as a nitrogen shuttle, a substance that picks up and drops off nitrogen around the body. Nitrogen is an essential component of DNA, the genetic material of life and muscle building.
